1. Basic Information About the Census

The 1989 Lithuanian Population and Housing census was carried out as a part of the census of the former Soviet Union. It reflects the state of the population as of midnight, 11 January 1989. The data were collected between 12 and 19 January 1989. The enumeration period was followed by a post-enumeration survey carried out from 20 to 24 January, when 25 percent of the dwellings were revisited. Data were collected through personal interviews. Information on persons who could not be contacted directly was obtained from family members, neighbours, landlords, and/or community, housing or other relevant authorities.

2. Questionnaires and Other Census Instruments

Short and long form questionnaires were used in the census. The short form had 20 questions, the long form included five additional questions. Long forms were used in every fourth dwelling (de jure population only).

4. Organization of Files

The sample is being distributed as one single file. The file is in SAS transportable (sequential) format, generated using the XPORT engine, which is platform independent and can be imported into most popular statistical packages (e.g. SPSS or BMDP). The data distribution media for all beta and pre-release versions of the data sets assembled as part of the PAU’s census samples project are CDs.

5. Other Remarks

Lithuania’s data set includes the entire population over age 50 of the country, as well as those persons below that age, who co-reside in the same dwelling unit with somebody over age 50.
