HUNGARY

MARIA SÁRANDI ÁRVAI

HAJDU Hajdúsági Iparmuvek Plc ( Debrecen )
Large-scale enterprise (household appliances manufacturing)

Vision of Entrepreneurship

"Our aim is to focus on customer's need and to provide quality products. This is in compliance with the continuously evolving demand for household appliances on both the Hungarian and world markets. We strive for the long-term production through our company, through our activities."

How I became an enterpreneur?

The company was state-owned and founded almost 50 years ago. In 1988, a new company law was enacted in Hungary. As a result we were able to organise a management-buy-out. This led to the transformation of the company into a shareholding company in 1993. As part of the privatisation the leaders of the former HAJDUSAGI IPARMUVEK together with external capital investors took over the ownership of the company. Now, with four other management colleagues, we own the majority of the company stock and gradually the business became also profitable.

Message for the 21st century

"Globalisation in the sense of products manufactured by multinational companies does not necessarily favour smaller national enterprises. These enterprises have an essential role in maximazing customer choice and ensuring a proper climate of competition. Our message is to support the market economy by manufacturing national quality products, that directly answer to local and regional needs."

How I became an enterpreneur?

During my career I have always been involved in quality issues. My education opened the door to understanding, that first rate quality products could only be developed though quality systems and the understanding of international standards. I belong to a fortunate few in Hungary, who had the benefit of training by the best experts in the field of the quality systems. I thought the best way to share my knowledge was to set up myself independently, within the framework of my own business. As a result, I have developed indigenous quality systems and train experts in compliance with international standards. This is an undertaking I carry out with colleagues at the QUALIPROD Quality and Technical Consulting Ltd. "

LEONA SZY

Kiskapu Ltd. (Budapest)
Small-sized enterprise(Bookselling and Publishing)

Vision of Entrepreneurship

"In my view it is important that small and medium companies find their place and remain competitive despite the trend of globalization and the domination of multinational companies. To achieve this, I believe, it is essential that we focus more on what we can do best, build and maintain close relationships with our customers, treat them as individuals and provide them excellent service. In our bookstores we aim to create a friendly and intimate atmosphere where our customers can feel comfortable and appreciated. I place special emphasis on personal contact both with my customers and employees which has special value in today’s rushing world, nevertheless it is commonly overlooked key factor for success."

How I became an enterpreneur?

"I became an entrepreneur due to the pressure of circumstances. I used to be a math teacher and in 1979 I suffered an accident in school. After surgeries and years of post treatment, it became obvious that I could not continue my carrier in my original profession. I started tutoring private students at home but those were difficult times as we had three kids to feed and my husband’s salary was not sufficient. In 1986 an offer came up to work on a bookstand temporarily. This was around the time of privatisations in Hungary, the state-owned monopolistic book distribution system collapsed leaving a vacuum behind. I saw opportunities in selling books on the street, as it showed a way out of our financial problems. Developing our business meant a lot of work (12-14 hours a day, sometimes even more) but with the support of my husband I continued and soon managed to acquire my own bookstands. Later, in 1991 we founded our bookselling and publishing company, which soon gained a significant position in the Hungarian book market. By that time we already had a wholesale warehouse, 16 stands and a few smaller bookshops. Since 1996, with the leadership of my youngest son Gyuri, our publishing section has specialized in computer books. Currently we run two large bookstores, twelve small shops under the name Anima. We also have a virtual bookstore on the Internet. Kiskapu as a brand has gained an excellent reputation as a computer book publishing house with 43 titles to date and the Linuxvilág monthly magazine."

Message for the 21st century

"Love is capable of incredible things. Believe in its power and when you feel there is no way out, it is not worth going on, think of it feeling as only temporary. Set a goal for yourself, fight for it and never give up!"

ERZSÉBET STRÉBELY

ForEnviron Environmental and Engineering Services Ltd. (Budapest)
Small-sized enterprise(environmental engineering services)

Vision of Entrepreneurship

"In my view an entrepreneur has to be creative, innovative, integrative and straightforward in order to fulfil all of the requirements established by the new century. In our rushing world many features have become essential to run a company, such as integrating ability or empathy since the importance of human resource management has revalorised recently. Any entrepreneur who does not pay enough attention to these new challenges would play a losing game."

How I became an enterpreneur?

"Originally I worked as a civil engineer with special interest in tunnel design. I came across many problems of environmental nature in connection with these works; the solution of those had always fascinated me. 1990 brought monumental changes and opportunities in Hungary; it became possible to initiate and run one’s own concern. At that time in the beginning of the nineties Hungary faced with huge challenges in the field of environmental protection. (For example the military establishment’s vacated by foreign armies left behind a legacy of badly damaged environment. It was one of the greatest challenges to improve the environment of these areas.) By 1993 my interest was so serious in moving into this area that I gave up the certainty of employment and decided to start a company with main interest in projects of environmental issues."

Message for the 21st century

"The more important and challenging task for my age is bringing up a new generation with a wide scale of values and sense of environmental protection otherwise our descendants will loose any chance to gain experience of this beautiful planet."
