UN/CEFACT to advance innovative solutions for sustainable trade at its 30th Forum

The United Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business (UN/CEFACT) has been leading innovation in technical standards, policy recommendations and guidelines for global trade facilitation for over two decades. The 30th UN/CEFACT Forum, to be held from 2-6 October in Rome in collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Economic Development and the Italian Trade Agency, will continue this trend, bringing together public and private sector experts on trade facilitation and electronic business from around the globe.

The Forum will provide the occasion for international experts to discuss cutting-edge issues including Blockchain and the traceability of sustainable textiles supply chains, among a range of other topics including Single Window development, efficient supply chain management, sustainable procurement in trade facilitation and eGovernment.

Inspired by recent global developments, a dedicated conference on Blockchain will share experiences and lessons learned from implemented Blockchain-based pilot projects in transportation, finance, supply chain management, agriculture and energy.

An additional conference on enhancing tracking and tracing in the clothing industry will explore principles, solutions and recommendations for an international framework initiative on transparency and traceability for sustainability patterns in textiles, supporting Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12, on responsible production and consumption.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of UN/EDIFACT (United Nations rules for Electronic Data Interchange for Administration, Commerce and Transport). Since its creation, this UN/CEFACT standard has proven to be a reliable choice for electronic data exchange for more than 100000 traders in the retail sector alone. A conference celebrating the 30th anniversary will highlight examples of UN/EDIFACT applications in international supply chains, transport and logistics.

Among other UN/CEFACT flagship products on the Forum agenda for further development are the recommendations and standards for Single Window implementation, small scale lodging houses for sustainable tourism, and the Electronic Consignment Note (eCMR) for transportation of goods by road, which aims at making the exchange of messages between carriers, shippers and receivers of goods faster and more reliable.
