More Heat with Less Wood - How to foster the sustainable use of wood energy?

Making a fire is easy, but achieving efficient usage of wood energy at home is everything else but easy! The challenge of optimally exploiting the heat capacity of wood affects several areas, reaching from thermal insulation of houses via heating technologies to the right choice of the type of wood and its quality. Since many diverse stakeholders are affected, cross-sectoral cooperation is inevitable in order to spread knowledge and best practices as well as to achieve sustainability concerning the use of timber.

Therefore, UNECE launches the project “More Heat with Less Wood”, comprising an exhibition and a two-day workshop. The exhibition will be open until 9 October and vividly raise awareness about the potential health impact and the resource efficiency of firewood use in private households.  Giving visitors the possibility to test their knowledge on wood energy by using ovens and various kind of timber, the exhibition illustrates the complexity of firewood use at home. In addition, it will provide information on the energy content of these different types of wood and their suitability for the use as energy source.

On 6 and 7 October, a workshop bringing together international organizations, researchers as well as policy-makers will aim at identifying ways to improve the utilization of wood energy under different socio-economic conditions. For instance, development agencies that implement wood energy projects across Eastern Europe, the Balkans and Central Asia will present their approaches towards ensuring resource efficiency of wood energy in private households.
