Joint session of the Working Group on IWRM and Working Group on Monitoring and Assessment

28 - 30 May 2018

Salle XXIV, Palais des Nations, Geneva, Switzerland

The second joint meeting of the Working Group on Integrated Water Resources Management (WGIWRM) and the Working Group on Monitoring and Assessment (WGMA) under the Water Convention will be held from 28 to 30 May 2018 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. The joint meeting will start at 3 p.m. on Monday, 28 May and end at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, 30 May.

The main objectives of the second joint meeting of the two working groups will be to:

-    Discuss the results and lessons learned from the reporting exercise under the Water Convention and on Sustainable Development Goal indicator 6.5.2, for which UNECE and UNESCO are co-custodians;

-    Discuss and agree on the draft programme of work for 2019–2021 under the Convention to be submitted to the Meeting of the Parties to the Convention for adoption at its eighth session (Astana, 10–12 October 2018);

-    Discuss and agree on other documents and draft decisions to be submitted to the eighth session of the Meeting of the Parties, in particular in the light of the implementation of the Convention at the global level.

Active participation by Parties and non-Parties in the meeting is therefore crucial.

At the margins of the joint meeting, Chad’s accession to the Water Convention will be celebrated. The ceremony will take place on Tuesday, 29 May 2018 from 9:00 to 10:30 in Room XXIV of the Palais des Nations in the presence of the Minister of Environment, Water and Fisheries of Chad. The ceremony aims to share the experience of Chad's accession process together with the rationale and benefits derived thereby. The ceremony will also allow sharing views from Parties on the globalization of the Convention and from countries which have started or consider starting a national accession process.

Participation and registration

The working languages will be English, French, Russian and Spanish.

The meeting is open to experts representing governmental authorities, joint bodies, non-governmental as well as international organizations and other interested stakeholders, from the academia or the private sector. Focal points are kindly requested to facilitate nomination of appropriate national representatives.

Delegates attending the meeting are requested to register by 14 May 2018 using the following link: https://uncdb.unece.org/app/ext/meeting-registration?id=GS67Y4
We recommend you to use Internet Explorer or Chrome browser for the online meeting registration.  In case of difficulties please contact the secretariat by e-mail (mayola.lidome@unece.org).

Visa application and hotel reservation

Since Switzerland is part of the Schengen area, visa applications may take 5 weeks. If you need a personal invitation letter for visa purpose, please indicate it clearly in the registration. Participants requiring a visa are therefore invited to register as soon as possible and start the visa application procedure at least 5 weeks in advance.

Geneva will be extremely busy at the time of the meetings, so we strongly encourage participants to book their hotels as soon as possible. Participants might also consider the option of not staying in Geneva itself but in nearby cities in Switzerland or neighboring France which are easily connected by public transport. The UNECE secretariat is not in the position to help with hotel booking.

Financial support

Eligible participants from countries with economies in transition and developing countries may apply for financial support to facilitate their participation in the meeting. Applications for financial support should be submitted to the UNECE secretariat (mayola.lidome@unece.org) as soon as possible, but not later than 16 April 2018 using the attached financial support request form which needs to be duly signed and stamped by the authorizing official. No application will be accepted after this deadline.
