Workshop on Coal Mine Methane and Abandoned Mine Methane in the context of Sustainable Energy

23 October 2017

Salle VIII, Palais des Nations, Geneva, Switzerland

The workshop will be organised by the UNECE Group of Experts on Coal Mine Methane in cooperation with the Global Methane Initiative (GMI).

The participants will be presented with cross-cutting activities conducted under the Committee on Sustainable Energy. In particular, they will be informed in detail about the project on Transformation of the Energy Sector and on the Pathways Project. The experts will explore potential avenues of how the expertise of the Group could be employed in these projects in order to contribute in the most efficient manner to their further development.

The workshop will also address issues related to the United Nations Framework Classification for Resources (UNFC), focusing on the status of Coal Mine Methane (CMM), Abandoned Mine Methane (AMM) and Ventilation Air Methane (VAM) within this system.

The main part of the meeting will be dedicated to the subject of Abandoned Mine Methane. This matter has not yet been addressed by the Group of Experts in greater detail. However, it is to be given much more attention in the upcoming biennium. Consequently, the session on AMM is conceived as an introductory event aiming to familiarise the Group with challenges and opportunities within this field. In addition, the session will equally act as a probing exercise, helping the Group to determine what concrete activities it is best suited to undertake in order to positively mark its presence in this domain.

Please note that the meeting will be in English only.

Please see also a news article briefly summarizing the meeting.
