Sigurd HEIBERG, Independent Consultant
Sigurd Heiberg has spent most of his working life in Government, focusing on petroleum resources management, and in industry negotiating expansion to new countries, providing decision support for petroleum exploration and production, for the initial public offering of Statoil shares and lately for corporate strategy.
Following six years in research, Sigurd’s career has spanned nine years at the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) through the formative period of the Norwegian petroleum administration, two years serving the Minister of Water, Energy and Minerals of Tanzania and 29 years at Statoil. Sigurd retired from Statoil in July 2013.
Sigurd is a long-standing member of the UNECE Expert Group on Resource Classification, which he chaired for seven years. He also Chaired the UNECE Committee on Sustainable Energy, as well as the Oil and Gas Reserves Committee of the Society of Petroleum Engineers.
He has engaged in education by helping NPD build PETRAD, a facility providing training in petroleum management and administration, and is a lecturer in petroleum resources management at the University of Stavanger. He is currently also a guest editor, with Professor Donald Lessard, MIT Sloan School of Management, of a forthcoming issue of the journal Energy Strategy Reviews.
Sigurd holds a BSc (Magna cum laude) degree from the University of California, Los Angeles and a Masters degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
