UNECE plans in support of water policy approved by Steering Committee in Kyrgyzstan
At its tenth meeting, held on 18 October 2013 in Bishkek, the Steering Committee of the National Policy Dialogue (NPD) on integrated water resources management (IWRM) in Kyrgyzstan approved proposed future priorities for support by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).
Over 30 representatives of different stakeholders and donors involved in improving the water resources situation in Kyrgyzstan attended the meeting, which was chaired by the Deputy Head of the Department of Water Management and Melioration of the Ministry of Agriculture and Melioration, Mr. Abdybai Dzhailoobaev.
Members of the high-level Steering Committee agreed with the UNECE proposal to concentrate its assistance on implementation of the national targets with regard to water quality, water supply and wastewater treatment adopted in June 2014. Continuation of support towards development of the basin management plan of the Chu Basin will remain the main activity of UNECE within the NPD programme in the coming years. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), another strategic partner of the National Policy Dialogues, will complement the work with proposals on the use of different economic instruments for implementation of basin management plans.
