Andrey graduated from Moscow State University of Forest in forestry engineering in 1976. He is currently Deputy Director of Science at the All-Russian Research Institute of Silviculture and Mechanization of Forestry and Professor of management and protection of forests in at that university.
His main areas of activity include scientific research, methods and tools for remote sensing, forest inventory, environmental assessment of forest resources, conservation and protection of biodiversity, sustainable forest management, and international cooperation. He has been a member of TAC MP (Montreal Processes) since 1995, a national expert in the Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe (Forest Europe) since 1995, a national correspondent of the Forest Resource Assessment since 1993 and a member of its Advisory Group since 2005. He has been Chairman of the Bureau of the European Forestry Commission (Food and Agriculture Organization) since 2011.
