Dr. Rutger Hoekstra and Dr. Jan Pieter Smits

Dr. Rutger Hoekstra and Dr. Jan Pieter Smits are responsible for the measurement of sustainable development at Statistics Netherlands. They work together on various projects including the "Sustainability Monitor for the Netherlands" and the "European Framework for Measuring Progress (e-Frame)"

Dr. Hoekstra holds a PhD in environmental economics and has been a guest lecturer at various universities (topics including the measurement of sustainable development, environmental input-output analysis and carbon footprints). He has written numerous scientific articles and a book (Edward Elgar Publishers). He was a member of the advisory board of the World Input-Output Database (WIOD) project.

Dr. Smits holds a PhD in economic history. He was formally affiliated to Groningen University and was vice-president of the Groningen Growth and Development Centre (GGDC). He is now also part of the advisory body of a project on "Historical Roots of the Dutch Sustainability Challenge: The impact of the Utilization of Material Resources on the Modernization of Dutch Society, 1850-2010".

Drs. Hoekstra and Smits share the post of chair/editor of the UNECE/OECD/Eurostat Task Force for Measuring Sustainable Development (TFSD)
