The FAO/ECE/ILO Joint Expert Network's mandate was approved by the Timber Committee and the European Forestry Commission in Rome on 23-24 October 2008.


  • The focus of the Experts Network’s activities is the implementation of sustainable forest management in Europe and North America, in particular relating to social, cultural and environmental aspects, on the basis of the broad policy objectives established by the parent bodies and the MCPFE. It concentrates on a limited range of topics, for instance training, workforce, private forestry, contractors, occupational safety and health, social dimension of forestry (SFM), i.e. on human resources.
  • While all countries benefit from international cooperation, the Experts Network recognizes the special needs of some countries of the CIS and Southeast Europe, as identified in the integrated programme of work of work.


  • Regular exchange of information and advice on best forest practice and technology transfer, allied with the use of innovative information technology and communication systems; 
  • International seminars and workshops which are primarily intended for forest specialists and practitioners;
  • Quality standards and analysis. In particular: (1) Second International Forestry Training Centres Conference, Lyss, Switzerland, November 2008; (2) European qualification certificate for forestry operations (EU programme); (3) Quality and forestry training: joint quality reference standards for forestry training centres (EU programme);
  • Generalisation of use of training products on forestry safety and training;
  • Contribution to EFECT programme on forest contractors with ENFE;
  • Data base on web with concrete examples of best practice in implementing sustainable forest management.
