About the Festival

On 23rd March 2006 in GENEVA, the Palais des Nations will host the 1st World Road Safety Film Festival on the occasion of the 48th session of the Working Party on Road Traffic Safety (WP.1) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe.

The International Road Safety Film Festival was first held in 1998 at the initiative of LASER EUROPE. Four others followed until 2003, when the fifth, held at UNESCO headquarters in April 2003, achieved global scope and recognition and confirmed the importance of communication, associated with education, science and culture, for road safety to achieve positive results in the medium and long term.

Today, this event is supported by numerous governmental organizations (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, European Union, European Conference of Ministers of Transport) and non-governmental organizations.

In parallel, LASER EUROPE has also encouraged the creation of regional festivals (a Latin American Festival was held in Curitiba, Brazil in 2000) and of thematic festivals organized by associations (e.g. the International Festival of Road Safety Campaigns organized by the Tunisian road safety organization).

Once again at the initiative of LASER EUROPE, the concept of the International Road Safety Film Festival has undergone an important evolution. From a two-yearly international event, it has now become in 2006 a world programme made up of a number of regional road safety film festivals. Projects are under preparation in Latin America, the Caribbean, West Africa and Europe.

This 1st World Festival will serve in particular as a springboard to promote the First United Nations Global Road Safety Week (23 to 29 April 2007) which will be co-organized by the five United Nations regional commissions and the World Health Organization (WHO).

1st session: Communication and road safety campaigns
The videos to be presented were produced for national or local road safety campaigns aimed at the general public, children, adolescents, young drivers, experienced drivers and offenders.

2nd session: Education and training
The films deal with road safety issues for pre-schools, primary schools, secondary schools, driving schools, associations and clubs.

3rd session: Road risk prevention in professional circles
The videos have been produced for use by business circles, specific companies or public authorities (risk management, internal communication, training, awareness-raising).

The innovations may relate to the safety of infrastructure, vehicles, information systems, etc.

5th TV broadcasts on road-safety
This category of the festival highlights the close relationship with the media of television.
