The work of UNECE on the transport of perishable foodstuffs goes back to 1948 when, with the food shortages after the Second World War, it was decided to set up a Working Party to look into the nature and extent of international traffic in perishable foodstuffs, to ascertain operating difficulties and to study transport requirements for subsequent years. Depositary notification C.N.181.2015.TREATIES.XI.B.22 has been issued notifying proposed amendments to the ATP adopted by WP.11 at its session in October 2014.

Saudi Arabia has acceded to the ATP. In accordance with Article 11 (2), the Agreement will enter into force for Saudi Arabia on 13 January 2016.

A letter has been sent to Ministers of Foreign Affairs of ATP contracting parties requesting the contact information for the authority competent to sign multilateral agreements (in accordance with article 7 of ATP).
The ATP establishes harmonized and improved technical conditions for the preservation of the quality of perishable foodstuffs during their carriage. These conditions concern mainly the temperature to be observed during the carriage and the equipment used for the carriage. The ATP establishes the appropriate temperatures under which the various types of perishable foodstuffs should be carried. It also lays down the requirements for the equipment, including its refrigerating capacity, insulating capacity and efficiency of thermal appliances as well as the methods and procedures for measuring and checking them.
