Introduction

The UNECE Committee on Housing and Land Management works to promote

  • energy efficient and adequate housing, including for those with special needs and vulnerable population groups
  • compact, inclusive, resilient, smart and sustainable cities
  • transparent and efficient land use, and property registration

This work is based on key United Nations policy documents on housing and urban development, including, Geneva UN Charter on Sustainable Housing and Strategy for Sustainable Housing and Land Management 2014-2020

In focus

Prepare for the DAY OF CITIES!

On 8 April 2019, the event Day of Cities is organized to bring together Mayors, urban managers and other key municipal practitioners for an exchange of views and knowledge sharing of good practices and successful planning strategies. The event will precede UNECE Commission's 68th session, which will be held on 9-10 April 2019. The theme of this session is "Smart sustainable cities: Drivers for Sustainable Development".

From Committee on Housing and Land Management to Committee on Urban Development, Housing and Land Management

Since the adoption of recent international and regional agreements, such as the New Urban Agenda and the Geneva UN Charter on Sustainable Housing, the Committee has widened its scope of activities to confront emerging urban challenges in the UNECE region. Hence, the proposal to add urban development in its name to  to adequately reflect the broadened scope of work. The proposal for the name change to Committee on Urban Development, Housing and Land Management was endorsed by the Committee at its recently concluded 79th session.

Highlights

The UNECE Urban Week 2018, organized by the Committee on Housing and Land Management, focused on sustainable urban solutions. It opened with the photo exhibition on women affected by homelessness titled "Women Without Walls" on World Habitat Day (1 October 2018). The exhibition will run until 12 October 2018. The main event of the Urban Week was the 79th session of the Committee on 4-5 October 2018, where the proposal to change the name of the Committee to Committee on Urban Development, Housing and Land Management was endorsed.
