International Transport Forum Conference “Global Transport Security and Safety for a Century”

On 5 April, the Special Envoy gave an opening speech at the ITF Conference on “Global Transport Security and Safety for a Century” in Riga, alongside Latvia’s Minister of Transport and ITF Secretary-General.
The Special Envoy congratulated Latvia on their Presidency of the ITF in 2017/18 and for their continuous commitment to improving road safety. He further commended Latvia for their National Road Safety Programme which aligns with SDG target 3.6.
Latvia’s long-term vision for road safety is focused on implementing Vision Zero approach, with cross-sectoral commitment. 

 

On the side of the ITF, the Special Envoy held a bilateral meeting with Mr. Uldis Augulis, Minister of Transport of Latvia. The Special Envoy provided an update on the recent activities and priorities within his mandate, highlighting the on-going efforts towards establishment of the United Nations Road Safety Trust Fund. Together they discussed road safety situation in Latvia with its challenges, while suggesting the way forward. The Special Envoy encouraged the Minister to continue advancing road safety and scaling up efforts towards meeting road safety-related SDGs.
