April

Following his appointment as the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety, Mr. Todt met with Mr. Christian Bach, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and with UNECE’s Sustainable Transport Division, headed by Ms. Eva Molnar, the Director. The meetings took place on 29 and 30 April in Geneva where the Special Envoy’s Term of Reference and goals were discussed. As a result of the meeting, the following priorities for the upcoming year were identified:
• Ensure road safety’s inclusion when the Sustainable Development Goals are set in New York in September.
• Ensure a successful outcome at the Global High-Level Ministerial Conference on Road Safety in Brasilia in November. One key deliverable could be the establishment of a new UN Global Fund for Road Safety, a goal which will be supported by the new FIA High Level Panel for Road Safety to be launched in the coming weeks.
