In 1997 an estimated 164,677 persons were killed on the roads in the ECE region. An estimated 6,118,844 persons were seriously injured. Of those, a notable percentage were vulnerable road users, as is shown in the following table and diagrams:

Vulnerable road users are more exposed to the risk of accidents than other road users. In 1997 an estimated 19% of persons involved in serious accidents (injured or killed) were vulnerable road users. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

When accidents occur they have much more serious consequences for vulnerable road users than for others.
