Statistical work related to the SDGs

UNECE Statistics supports the monitoring of progress towards SDGs in the UNECE region with partners and develops measurement of sustainable development. We:

·    Streamline statistical work in the UNECE region to support the monitoring of progress towards SDGs
·    Modernize statistical production and share tools to enable taking up the challenge of measuring SDGs
·    Develop methods, standards and guidance to enhance the quality and comparability of statistics and SDG monitoring
·    Build capacity for reporting on SDG indicators

We work with Chief Statisticians who are committed to the measurement of SDGs and will engage with all data providers to lead the provision of data on SDGs!

End poverty in all its forms everywhere

We exchange knowledge and best practices in poverty measurement in the UNECE region and develop guidelines for improving the international comparability and availability of statistics and indicators on poverty.

End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture

We develop methods for measuring poverty to enable better analysis of the effectiveness of measures to end hunger.

Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages

We developed guidance to enable the production of internationally comparable measures of health and well-being, such as a survey module for measuring the health state and guidelines for time-use surveys that are a key source of information on well-being.

Ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning

We promote statistical literacy and numeracy, especially through the Making Data Meaningful guides.

We develop guidance on measuring human capital and on satellite accounts for education and training.

Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

We develop guidelines and indicators on gender statistics, collect and disseminate data and build capacity of member States to measure and analyse progress in achieving gender equality.

We strive to develop methodologies and build the capacity of member States to improve the quality of environmental indicators needed for various policies in the fields of environment, green economy and SDGs.

We work with member States to improve energy statistics, especially for the purposes of analysing climate change. Energy indicators, their methodologies and capacity to produce them, are developed as part of the work on environmental indicators.

Promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and decent work for all

We exchange best practices, collect and disseminate data and develop guidance to improve statistics on economic growth and employment, for example in national accounts, globalization, prices, business registers, labour mobility and quality of employment.

Build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialization and foster innovation

We carried out a review of challenges in measuring the information society and producing statistics on science, technology and innovation. The work continues under the United Nations Statistical Commission (UNSC) globally.

We also help countries to measure global production and maintain business registers.

Reduce inequality within and among countries

We collect and disseminate data on political participation. We have published guidance on income measurement and guidance on measuring sustainable development with indicators.

Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable

Cities face many challenges from globalization, population changes and ageing and effects of climatic events. We develop the use of official statistics for the measurement of extreme events and disasters in the UNECE region, and improve capacities to produce environmental indicators some of which relate to urban areas.

We exchange best practices, develop guidance and build countries’ capacities to improve national accounts and the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA) needed for the analysis of consumption and production patterns.

Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

We work with member States to improve official statistics for analysing climate change: greenhouse gas emissions and their sources, impacts of climate change and efforts to mitigate the changes and adapt to the consequences. We are developing a set of key indicators to measure climate change.

Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources

Oceanic resources are not a focus of UNECE work. However, the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA) is a comprehensive source of data for the analysis of sustainable use of natural resources. We exchange best practices and develop guidance to build countries’ capacities to improve data on water resources.

Promote just, peaceful and inclusive societies

Official statistics are the cornerstone of just and inclusive societies. UNECE carries out activities to build countries' capacities in statistics and conducts Global Assessments of national statistical systems with EFTA and Eurostat to strengthen the institutional setting of official statistics.

We developed in a joint effort an international classification of crime for statistical purposes to enable the production of internationally comparable information on just and safe societies.
