UNECE signs MoU with the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century

The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today in Geneva during the first session of the UNECE Group of Experts on Renewable Energy.

The two organizations formalize their cooperation with a view to significantly contribute to increasing the share of renewable energy and help achieve the objective of access to energy to all in the UNECE region. UNECE and REN21 will closely cooperate to collect and disseminate data, information, know-how and best practices for the deployment of renewable energy through the reliable data collection process established by REN21.

This cooperation will include - inter alia - the joint preparation of the Renewable Energy Status Report for the UNECE Region in 2015, in cooperation with other key partners and stakeholders. The report will adapt to the region the approach defined in the international REN21 Renewables Global Status Report and will serve as a baseline and monitoring tool on the uptake of renewable energy in the region.

UNECE Executive Secretary Christian Friis Bach said “The cooperation between UNECE and REN21 intends to close the data and information gap which exists today in our region on renewables, in order to effectively encourage the uptake of renewable energy across the entire region”.

REN21 Executive Secretary Christine Lins said: “REN21‘s multi-stakeholder network—with over 500 contributors from 80 countries—is central to accurately tell the exciting story of renewable energy development globally. We look forward to working with UNECE to close existing data gaps so as to provide a sound basis for solid policy decision- making to advance renewables in the UNECE region.”

This cooperation will also contribute to initiate a multi-stakeholder dialogue with the private sector, academia, civil society and other international actors on renewable energy within the post-2015 development context and to attain the objectives of the Sustainable Energy for All initiative of the United Nations Secretary-General.
