New name of the Committee

Since the adoption of recent international and regional agreements, such as the New Urban Agenda and the Geneva UN Charter on Sustainable Housing, the Committee has widened its scope of activities to confront emerging urban challenges in the UNECE region. Hence, the ECE Commission, at its 68th session, has changed the name of the Committee on Housing and Land Management to the “Committee on Urban Development, Housing and Land Management” to adequately reflect the broadened scope of work.

Voices of Mayors- Day of Cities (8 April 2019, Geneva)

The Day of Cities brought some 50 Mayors and Deputy Mayors from 33 UNECE countries to UN Geneva for the first time and gathered over 400 participants. The event has provided an opportunity for the municipal authorities to share challenges and successful approaches for sustainable urban development. Their role in advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development has been recognized. Discussions underscored the need for UNECE’s continued support to the work of cities and local authorities and the importance of further facilitating exchange of experiences, best practices and practical solutions to help achieve the SDGs in urban areas.
