UNFC and Resource Classification - Home

United Nations Framework Classification for Fossil Energy and Mineral Reserves and Resources (UNFC) - a universally acceptable and internationally applicable scheme for the classification and reporting of fossil energy and mineral reserves and resources.

Highlights

UNFC - a tool for good governance of mineral resources in Africa: good governance of mineral resources is critical for sustainable development in Africa.  This message is being reinforced at the Regional Technical Workshop on UNFC  with a focus on uranium resources (Johannesburg, 10-14 November). UNFC-2009, with its unique applicability to all extractive activities, has been highlighted as the system that can assist African countries in developing and managing their resources.

Report of EGRC fifth session now available: more than 170 experts worldwide participated in the UNECE Resource Classification Week, 28 April-2 May.

UNECE Resource Classification Week: Experts from the UNECE region, as well as from Africa, Asia, and Latin America, gathered in Geneva, 28 April-2 May for the EGRC fifth session to discuss the UNFC.

UNFC-2009 incorporating Specifications for its Application now available in Spanish

UNFC-2009 now available in Hungarian: the translation was prepared with the support of the Geological and Geophysical Institute of Hungary, in collaboration with the Hungarian Office for Mining and Geology and other experts

Developing a common assessment methodology for renewable energy resources through application of UNFC: this was the focus of the UNECE Workshop in Washington, 24-25 March. The event was hosted by the World Bank and sponsored by BP, DuPont, Shell and Total, with participation from IRENA and Bloomberg New Energy Finance

Mandate of Expert Group on Resource Classification extended until December 2019 -The extension of the mandate of the EGRC to December 2019 was approved by the UNECE Executive Committee on 4 December 2013.  The revised Mandate and Terms of Reference are available to view here.
