The UNECE/FAO Team of Specialists on Forest Policy in Eastern Europe and Central Asia gathers national experts from the UNECE region, with the following objective

  • Exchange information and experiences on forest policy formulation and implementation,
  • Identify priority issues in eastern European and central Asian countries,
  • Promote a transparent regional discussion of priorities and best practices in reforming policies and institutions in the sector,
  • And integrate countries into existing policy networks.

The Team will advise the UNECE/FAO Secretariat on the implementation of its programme of work, specifically work area 5 “policy and cross-sectoral issues” .

The Team will also promote the implementation of the Krtiny Declaration (English, Russian) which addresses recommendations to governments in the region and International Organizations to strengthen the forest policy and institutional framework. The Team is active within the framework of the UNECE/FAO Strategy on Forestry activities in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

The Team’s objectives and expected outputs are specified in its mandate, approved by the Timber Committee and the European Forestry Commission in Rome on 23-24 October 2008. The Team adopted a more elaborate workplan (English, Russian) for the period until 2013 at its inaugural meeting held on 4-6 March 2009 in Budapest.  The second meeting will take place 20-22 September in Istanbul.

The FAO Regional Office for SEUR provides the secretariat for this Team, with the support of the UNECE/FAO Forestry and Timber Section.
