United Nations Hall des pas perdus, Geneva

On 15 February, UNECE and FAO, in partnership with the United States of America Permanent Mission to the United Nations and the United Nations Office in Geneva, officially opened the International Year of Forests at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.

Speeches by Mr. Sergei Ordzhonikidze, UNOG Director General, Ambassador Betty E. King, Mr. Eduardo Rojas-Briales, FAO Assistant Director-General and Mr. Andrey Vasilyev, UNECE Deputy Executive Secretary, preceded the opening of the exhibition ‘The Art of Trees – A forest Gallery’. For this occasion, UNECE and FAO had constructed a “temporary forest” inside the Palais des Nations building, in the “Salle des pas perdus” gallery.

Some 70 living trees from 27 different species from Europe and North America, with heights ranging from 2 to 6 meters, create a stunning atmosphere and provided an ideal background to an artwork exhibition of the American painter Monte Dolack, whose work has been inspired throughout the years by North American forests and outdoor living.

This forest gallery enabled guests, delegates and civil society to reflect on the growing appreciation of the contribution of forests to economic, environmental and social wellbeing.

Part of the exhibition will enjoy a second life, as twenty-one of the trees on display will be planted in the park of the Palais des Nations after the exhibition, further enriching the biodiversity of the park.

The exhibition, organized with UNOG’s cultural activities programme, is open until 25 February.
