The Fourth Session of the UNECE Committee on International Cooperation and Integration
28 – 30 September 2009
Salle V, Palais des Nations, Geneva

Geneva, 25 September 2009 --

innovation

Fostering innovation and entrepreneurship should be part and parcel of the strategy aimed at overcoming the ongoing economic and financial crisis challenging the Governments of UNECE countries. To deal with this issue, the Policy Discussion Segment of the fourth session of the UNECE Committee on Economic Cooperation and Integration will take the form of an International Conference, which will debate on how to develop efficient public policies in support of innovation and foster the initiative of the private sector to remedy the current severe economic dislocations. Addressing these topics, the Conference will provide a platform for sharing good practices and lessons learned among high-level policy-makers, government officials, as well as representatives of businesses and academia. The participants will discuss ways and means of promoting innovation-based entrepreneurial opportunities as a driver of sustained knowledge-based economic growth in the future, and the outcome of the Conference will help the Committee to render its programme of work more pertinent to this task.

At its fourth session, the Committee on Economic Cooperation and Integration will also review the implementation of its programme of work and the outputs delivered by its Teams of Specialists and networks of experts. Particular attention will be paid to the growing scope of technical cooperation and capacity-building activities performed by the various expert teams in the areas of intellectual property rights commercialization and protection, public-private partnerships and financing for enterprise development.

Finally, the session will discuss the results of the 2008-2009 biennial performance valuation of the Committee’s programme implementation and will consider the proposals to improve the modalities of its work. This evaluation examines to which extent good practices and policy recommendations developed by CECI are incorporated by countries into national legislation and regulations, and assess the scope of its capacity building and technical cooperation activities.
