Albania joins e-rail Agreement

Geneva, 7 June 2007 -- On 5 June 2007 Albania acceded to the European Agreement on Main International Railway Lines (AGC), bringing the number of Contracting Parties to this Agreement to 28.

The AGC provides the legal framework for the construction and development of a coherent international rail network, the E-rail network. The Agreement identifies the E-railway lines that channel major international rail traffic flows throughout the UNECE region and establishes the minimum uniform technical standards those railway lines must respect as well as a distinguishing number for each E-rail line.

The AGC, which was drawn up under the auspices of the Inland Transport Committee of the Economic Commission for Europe in 1985, has been regularly kept up to date since then in order to take into account new developments in international rail transport links in the UNECE region.

In addition to the major railway traffic lines in Western, Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, the AGC now includes main international rail routes in the Caucasus and Central Asia, thereby facilitating the integration of these economies into the European and the world economy.

The Agreement will enter into force for Albania on 3 September 2007.
