Albania joins the Protocol to the CMR Convention
Geneva, 24 January 2007 -- On 15 January
2007, Albania deposited the instrument of accession to the Protocol
to the UNECE Convention on the Contract for the International Carriage
of Goods by Road (CMR). In accordance to its provisions, the Protocol will
enter into force for Albania on 12 April 2007.
Albania accession brings the total number of States Parties to
the Protocol to the CMR to 36.
The CMR Convention fixes the conditions for the contract for
the carriage of goods by road between the forwarder and the carrier.
In particular, it provides for the use of the consignment note
and establishes the conditions for liability, for example in the
case of loss of the goods or delays. Its Protocol establishes the
Standard Drawing Right (SDR) as the currency for the settlement
of compensation rather than the gold franc used in the original
CMR.
The UNECE Working Party on Road Transport (SC.1) is currently
about to finalize a new additional Protocol to the CMR, which would
allow the use of electronic consignment notes in international
road transport.
2006 was a record year for UNECE legal instruments dealing with
transport with 52 new accessions. 2007 has also started well, with
3 new accessions registered in less than 20 days.
