Albania joins the AETR Agreement
Geneva, 22 August 2006 -- On 20 July 2006, Albania adhered
to the European Agreement concerning the Work of Crews of Vehicles engaged
in International Road Transport (AETR). This new accession brings the total
number of States Parties to the AETR Agreement to 45.
The AETR Agreement regulates the working and rest periods of professional
drivers and the control device enabling the control of those periods. In
doing so, the AETR Agreement contributes to harmonize the conditions of
competition among road carriers. It also contributes to reduce the risk
of road crashes by avoiding excessive driving periods and fatigue of drivers
of trucks and coaches.
The AETR Agreement, developed by the UNECE Working Party on Road Transport
(SC.1), has been recently amended in order to enable the use of the digital
tachygraph, which cannot be tampered. A revision of the Agreement is in
progress aimed at aligning its provisions with those adopted this year
by the European Union concerning the driving and rest times of professional
drivers.
The UNECE body is also considering the possibility to open up the Agreement
to countries outside the UNECE region.
