meets José Manuel
Barroso
Geneva, 12 April 2006 -
Mr. Marek Belka, the new Executive Secretary
of the United Nations Economic Commission
for Europe (UNECE) visited the European
Commission in Brussels on 10 and 11 April
2006.
On this occasion he met with Mr. José Manuel
Barroso, President of the European Commission.
They discussed the major areas of common
interest to the two institutions, in
particular the European Union Neighbourhood
Policy, energy security and the role
of the UNECE in the context of the European
architecture. In order to strengthen
the cooperation between the two institutions,
Mr. Barroso has decided to establish
a focal point to deal with UNECE matters.
Mr. Belka also met Mr. Günter
Verheugen, Vice-President of the European
Commission in charge of Enterprise and
Industry, Ms. Danuta Hübner, Commissioner
for Regional Policy and Mr. Joaquín
Almunia, Commissioner for Economic and
Monetary Affairs. Mr. Belka also had
a meeting with Mr Ján Kubiš,
European Union Special Representative
for Central Asia.
During his stay in Brussels, Mr. Belka
met with Mr. Karel De Gucht, Minister
of Foreign Affairs of Belgium, whose
country is currently chairing the UNECE.
They discussed issues related to UNECE
and OSCE cooperation, as well as activities
of the UNECE in Central Asia and the
preparation of the forthcoming 60 th
anniversary of the UNECE.
