Implementing the reform
Sixty-first annual session of the Commission
Palais des Nations (Conference Room XVIII), Geneva
21-23 February 2006
Geneva, 17 February 2006 - At
their annual session, on Tuesday 21 February
2006, the 55 member States* of the
United Nations Economic Commission for
Europe (UNECE)
will decide on ways and means to implement
the reform which they adopted last December.
"The UNECE is
placed in the middle of three major political
and economic processes: globalization
of economy and trade, increasing European
integration around the European Union
and the reform of the United Nations.
In order to adapt the UNECE to those
three challenges, member States have
put in place a reform process," says
Mr. Marek Belka,
the new Executive Secretary of the UNECE.
The reform adopted in December restructured
the UNECE programme of work and emphasized
the necessity of a demand driven and
flexible approach. Cooperation with other
organizations was also stressed.
The economic context for UNECE reform
will be taken up on Wednesday, 22 February.
Member States will be invited to express
their views as to how the UNECE will
translate the framework provided in the
reform for a new subprogramme on Economic
Cooperation and Integration into a concrete
work programme. A panel of member States
representatives, moderated by Mr. Dariusz
Rosati, will launch this discussion.
The General Segment
of the Commission will discuss the preparation
of the Strategic Framework for 2008-2009
and technical cooperation activities
of the UNECE. It will also consider progress
reports on specific issues: UNECE contribution
to Commission on Sustainable Development
cycles and promotion of ICT in UNECE
work.
The session and discussions are open
to the public.
