High-level Workshop
"The Economic Dimension of Security in Europe:
Facing New Challenges in a Changing Environment"

Geneva, Palais des Nations, Room XII
8 March 2004, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Geneva, 24 February 2004 - What are the main threats to the economic dimension of security in the region? How can they be eliminated or minimized? What could be the role of the enlarged EU in this? How will better integration of transition countries into the European and international economy help prevent the emergence of new barriers in the region? In which ways can cooperation between the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) create a positive environment?

These are some of the questions that will be addressed at a high-level Workshop on "The Economic Dimension of Security in Europe: Facing New Challenges in a Changing Environment" on 8 March. The one-day Workshop, which is being organized jointly by UNECE and OSCE, is part of a UNECE project on "wider Europe" issues. Speakers will include high-level representatives of international and regional organizations, the European Commission, Governments, business, NGOs and academia.

As well as discussing the new challenges and threats to the economic dimension of security, the Workshop will explore how regional cooperation and integration between the enlarged EU and non-acceding transition countries will affect the future shape of the economic dimension of security in the next decade, while at the same time avoiding the creation of new divisions in the region.

Among the topics to be addressed are: transborder crime, trade and security, good governance, and financial stability as a prerequisite for economic security. The OSCE's new "Strategy Document for the Economic and Environmental Dimension" and the Wider Europe initiative of the European Commission will be also discussed.
