Discover the UN Family and Have Fun!

Featuring a New CD-ROM for Ages 4 to 94

Geneva, 7 July 2004 - The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) recently released a CD-ROM called “Discover the UN Family and Have Fun!” with interactive games that make learning about the UN exciting and fun. Birdie, the game’s spirited guide, invites you to jump on his back and accompany him on a journey to discovering the United Nations.

There are four types of games to choose from. “Where’s Birdie,” the “UN puzzle,” “Spot the errors” and “Memory” uncover explanations of the many UN functions. Descrambling an image of freighters and airplanes loaded with emergency cargo teaches players that the World Food Programme (WFP) provides food for victims of war and natural disaster. Locating Birdie in a pastoral image of villagers working in their rice fields explains that the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) helps farmers build irrigation channels and dams to retain rainwater.

The CD also includes important documents that the UN has drawn up, such as the Charter of the United Nations, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Learning about the United Nations enriches the lives of people around the world because it empowers them with knowledge of the Organization’s essential activities. As Nane Annan points out in her introduction to the games, it is important to learn about the United Nations and its mission to help people live better, safer and more dignified lives.

Let the games begin!
