Fifty-ninth annual session of the Commission
Palais des Nations (Conference Room XVIII), Geneva
24-26 February 2004
Geneva, 17 February
2004 - The 55 member States of the
United Nations Economic Commission for Europe
(UNECE) will meet for its annual session
at the Palais des Nations in Geneva on 24-26
February 2004.
On the first day, the Commission will review inter alia the
current economic situation in the UNECE region based on the Economic Survey
of Europe, 2004 No. 1. One of the main topics taken up thereafter will
be "Policies to stimulate competitiveness and growth". Under this item two
round-table discussions will be organized, both with the participation of
government representatives. It is proposed that the first provide for an exchange
of experiences on best practices and national policies that have proved successful
in increasing competitiveness and growth. The second would focus on regional
initiatives and cooperation in the UNECE region as well as the role of the
UNECE in stimulating competitiveness. During its High-level Policy Segment,
the Commission will also focus on its own reform.
The General Segment of the Commission will discuss:
- UNECE's cooperation with OSCE
- The work of the UNECE: achievements, constraints and perspectives
- Preparation for and follow-up to world and regional conferences
- UNECE technical cooperation activities in 2003
During its final session, the Commission will elect its new
Bureau.
The session and discussions are open to the public.
