Environmental Performance Reviews

17 country assessments on one CD-ROM

Geneva, 16 May 2003 - The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) has just issued a new CD-ROM with the environmental performance reviews (EPRs) of countries of Central and Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia.

The CD-ROM is a compilation of detailed evaluations of the state of the environment of: Albania, Armenia, Bulgaria (second review), Croatia, Estonia (first and second reviews), Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Republic of Moldova, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro (Yugoslavia), Slovenia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.

It also includes reports on Environmental Policy in Transition: Lessons Learned from Ten Years of UNECE Environmental Performance Reviews and on Sustainable Development in Europe, North America and Central Asia.

The EPRs are undertaken in countries of Central and Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia under a mandate given by Ministers at the second Ministerial Conference "Environment for Europe" (Lucerne, Switzerland, 1993). The EPRs are intended to:

  • assist countries in transition to improve their management of the environment by establishing baseline conditions and making concrete recommendations for better policy implementation and performance;
  • promote dialogue among UNECE member countries;
  • integrate environmental policies into sectoral policies and integrate further health aspects into environmental performance;
  • harmonize environmental conditions and policies throughout the region and contribute to sustainable development.
