ROUND TABLE ON IMPLEMENTING TRADE FACILITATION
IN TRANSITION ECONOMIES
Palais des Nations, Geneva, 31 May (a.m.)
Weak support institutions, poor adherence to international standards, poor
enforcement of market contracts, low availability of trade finance, and a
lack of transparency in customs procedures constitute important barriers to
trade in a number of transition economies.
Overcoming these constraints is a key element to integrating transition economies
into the western European and global trade economy. Recognizing this, the
United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) has organized a Round
Table on Implementing Trade Facilitation in Transition Economies on the morning
of 31 May 2002, in Geneva, during its Trade Facilitation Week.
The Round Table will provide a unique platform for transition economies to
review priority issues related to trade facilitation implementation in the
region and an open forum for participants to contribute to a debate and provide
input into the future work of UNECE in this area.
Participants with direct experience in implementing Trade Facilitation will
discuss the practical issues and problems they have confronted. Among these
are high-level speakers from the Czech Republic, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Poland,
Ukraine. Possible strategies for enhancing the implementation of trade facilitation
in transition economies will be considered and the Round Table will follow
up on the issues and opportunities to advance trade facilitation arising from
the International Forum on Trade Facilitation on 29 and 30 May.
The Round Table is open to the public, and all interested parties are invited
to attend.
