The
UNECE Trans-European Railway (TER) Project approved
new development strategy
Geneva,
11 September 2001
The 14th session of the UNECE sponsored Trans-European Railway (TER) Project’s
Steering Committee which took place in Antalya, Turkey, adopted a new
development strategy for further integration of the TER Project in the new
European transport context and for closer cooperation with other fora and
related initiatives. According to this new strategy, actions for a closer
cooperation with the European Commission would be taken. This covers
particularly the implementation of projects and the development of the
Pan-European Corridors.
The session
in which 11 central, eastern and south-eastern European countries were
represented, approved also the Programme of Work for 2001 and adopted
important decisions aiming at stronger political support for the
implementation of the actions agreed upon and at strengthening the human
resources of the Budapest based TER Project Central Office.
The
Committee decided to place emphasis upon several railway topics of increased
interest for the TER member countries such as the harmonized rail traffic
management system, the extension of Trans European Rail Freight Freeways in
the TER region, the facilitation of railway border crossings and adoption of
measures in line with the European standards, the promotion of the Freight
Villages/Logistic Centres concept in the TER region etc. For these priority
topics several specialized meetings will be organized by the Project in
various TER member countries.
The TER
Project is a sub-regional cooperation framework established in 1990 under
the aegis of the UNECE (Geneva) by the Governments of Central and Eastern
European countries for the development of railway and combined transport
infrastructure in the region, the assistance in the integration process of
transport infrastructure systems and the facilitation of the international
railway traffic in Europe.
The
activities of the Project are supported from the contribution of 16 TER member
countries: Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic,
Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Russian
Federation, Slovakia, Slovenia and Turkey.
