Italy joins the UNECE TER Project

Geneva, 13 March 2001

Last Thursday, 8 March, Italy has become the 16th participating country in the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) sponsored Trans-European Railway (TER) Project, after Ambassador Andrea Negrotto Cambiaso, head of the Permanent Representation of Italy in Geneva, signed the UNECE TER Trust Fund Agreement on behalf of his Government.

The TER Project is a sub-regional co-operation framework established in 1990 under the aegis of the Geneva-based UNECE by the Governments of the Central, Eastern and South Eastern European countries for the development of a coherent rail and combined transport infrastructure and transport system in the region.

The project has so far been instrumental in the reconstruction and up-grading of the international rail links of the participating countries, contributed to the interoperability of the European railway system, elaborated studies, created a continuously updated TER Data Bank, published a large number of technical documents, guidelines, recommendations and is working for the harmonisation of border control procedures in international rail traffic.

The TER project is supported by the contributions of participating countries to the UNECE TER Trust Fund and has a National Co-ordinator in each participating country and a decision-making body, the Steering Committee of the Project, composed of the National Co-ordinators. It comprises a Project Central Office, located in Budapest (Hungary), and a Project Manager.

The following 15 countries are full members of the TER: Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Russian Federation, Slovak Republic, Slovenia and Turkey. In addition, Belarus, Latvia, Republic of Moldova, The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Ukraine are participating in certain activities of the Project as observer countries.
