UNECE/Moldova: a strong and long-term cooperation

Geneva, 22 May 2001

On 8 May 2001, Mrs. Danuta Hübner, United Nations Under-Secretary-General, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) met with the Prime-Minister of the Republic of Moldova, H.E. Vasilie Tarlev, who was accompanied by H.E. Nikolae Chernomaz, Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The meeting which took place in Geneva, just before Moldova became member of the World Trade Organization, focused on the general economic situation prevailing in Moldova and on the cooperation between UNECE and the Moldovan Government. In this context, the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Moldova and UNECE on providing technical cooperation was considered as important by both parties.

In order to concentrate UNECE’s effort on the implementation and acceleration of the economic reform, the Government of the Republic of Moldova and UNECE will organize an Economic Forum entitled "Toward the Road to Market Economy" in autumn 2001 in Chisinau. This forum will be jointly organized with the Central European Initiative (CEI). The Forum will discuss the macro-economic reform policy, foreign direct investment issues and development of the Small- and Medium-sized Enterprises (SME) sector.

Furthermore, in order to help Moldovan entrepreneurs, the UNECE will launch a project on "Support to Moldovan Government in Development Entrepreneurship and Business Training." This project is implemented and financed by the European Training Foundation, the Chamber of Commerce of Grenoble together with a Moldovan Task Force. It is envisaged to train a group of Moldovan trainers in entrepreneurial knowledge, who will disseminate the entrepreneurial culture and skill among the vocational education and training schools students.

In connection with the private sector development, the UNECE Regional Adviser on Entrepreneurship and SMEs and CEI Focal Point visited Moldova at the end of April. He discussed the possibility of establishing special credit lines for micro-crediting of self-employments and providing credit for start-up entrepreneurs jointly with the Moldovan Fund for Small Business Development and other intermediaries (local government’s city departments and financial intermediaries).
