Business enterprise and economic growth in the Central Asian
and the Caucasian countries:
creating a supportive and secure environment

Geneva, 3 May 2001

to be discussed at the fifty-sixth annual session of the Commission

8-11 May 2001
(Palais des Nations, Rooms XVII and VII)

For four days, the 55 member States of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) will meet for the annual session of the Commission at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. It has become a tradition that the first day of the Commission session concentrates on an in-depth discussion of the economic situation of the UNECE region. Eminent economists and policy makers lead the discussion. This year, "Business enterprise and economic growth in the Central Asian and the Caucasian countries: creating a supportive and secure environment" will be at the centre of the debate on 8 May 2001 in Room XVII (see programme).

The participants will address topics such as: general review of progress and problems in the transition process since 1991 in the Caucasian Republics and in Central Asia; privatization, regulatory reform and enterprise development in Central Asian Republics and Caucasian Republics; and the living standards and social policy.

During its General Segment beginning on 10 May in Room VII, the Commission will discuss the forthcoming UNECE Ministerial Conference on Ageing. A Briefing on this event will be given by Mr. Peter Haupt, State Secretary of the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth of the Federal Republic of Germany. Agenda items on strengthening links within the UNECE region in the field of environment, energy and transport; the Millennium Declaration: Challenges for Europe; UNECE strategic directions; and matters arising from the work of the subsidiary bodies requiring decision by, or meriting the attention of the Commission will then be taken up. Finally, the Commission will elect its officers.

The session and discussions are open to the public.
