Ratifies UN/ECE Treaty Regulating
Driving and Rest Periods of International Lorry Drivers
On 4 October 2000, Switzerland will become
the 41st country Party to the UN/ECE European Agreement concerning the Work of Crews of
Vehicles engaged in International Road Transport (AETR) following the ratification of this
Agreement on 7 April 2000.
The AETR regulates the driving and rest periods of drivers of
commercial goods vehicles of more than 3.5 tonnes engaged in international road transport.
To this end, the AETR requires that every such goods vehicle should be equipped with a
control device, a tachograph, and provides requirements for the construction, testing,
installation and inspection of such devices.
The AETR will soon incorporate the new digital tachograph, in line with
that being made mandatory in the EU countries. This new tachograph will bring greater
accuracy to the recording process and prevent fraud.
The Agreement, which applies the principles of the International Labour
Organization, was developed in the framework of the United Nations Economic Commission for
Europe (UN/ECE) and its Inland Transport Committee as one of the legal instruments which
promote the facilitation and improve the safety of international transport of passengers
and goods.
The UN/ECE is the Geneva based European branch of the United Nations.
Its membership comprises all European countries, the United States of America, Canada,
Israel and the Republics of the Caucasus and Central Asia.
