How Can Real Estate Markets Be Best Promoted
in the Transition Economies?

International organizations meet in Geneva to discuss options

A growing number of countries and international organizations are becoming aware of the benefits of well-functioning real estate markets for social and economic progress. With this in mind the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE), through its Trade Division and the Real Estate Advisory Group (REAG), is working to promote greater understanding of the fundamental importance to transition economies of successfully functioning markets in real estate. A meeting was held on 26 May in Geneva bringing together international organizations and major non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that deal with real estate issues in countries with economies in transition. The objective was to share experience and discuss areas of common interest regarding work on this issue in the region of central and eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). In addition it received the results of a Survey about the issue. A report on the Survey will be published shortly.

The Real Estate Advisory Group presented a Survey of the activities of international organizations and major NGOs. This formed the basis for a subsequent exchange of views and experiences, as well as discussions on information exchange and future cooperation among the participants. The meeting helped to establish new relations and to reinforce the network that already existed among certain participants.

Participants showed strong commitment to continuing contacts, creating an innovative exchange of information and developing future joint activities. This should contribute to improving the whole environment for the real estate sector, as well as to attracting the attention of national Governments, the private sector and foreign investors to the importance, impact and opportunities of the real estate market on overall economic progress.
