Romania’s Chemical Industry Opens its Doors

One-week Study Tour of the Industry in September 2000

Romania’s chemical industry used to be one of the most important in central and eastern Europe. But the radical economic changes of 1990 plunged the industry into a crisis from which it is now slowly but determinedly recovering.

As the industry seriously lacks visibility, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) is assisting it becoming more well known internationally. Together with the Government of Romania, the UN/ECE is organizing a one-week Study Tour of the industry from 17 to 24 September this year.

In its heyday, Romania’s chemical industry had large and modern facilities, good infrastructure, a domestic raw material base and well-educated staff. During the 1980s its gross output was exceeded only by that of the Soviet Union. Its output regularly surpassed that of Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary and the other countries of the region.

Today in Romania, the foreign investor will find in the chemical industry a welcome mix of highly trained and motivated personnel, a new investment environment and an openness to cooperating with foreign partners. Potential partners may be found among the chemical firms that already exist in many sub-sectors of the industry, including basic petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, polymers and plastics, fibres, fine chemicals, paints and varnishes and a host of other products.

Participants in the Study Tour will meet government officials concerned with the industry and take part in a workshop discussing the future of specific aspects of the industry. They will also visit more than ten firms throughout the country. The firms have all shown interest in cooperating with foreign partners, either as joint venture partners or on a supplier/client basis. They were selected to provide a broad view of many sectors of the chemical industry.

Participation in the Study Tour is free of charge, except for costs such as hotel, meals and transportation. Romania offers a "package price" covering these costs; this price varies depending on type and standard of accommodation chosen.
