 Reviving Chemically Contaminated Sites

New comprehensive list of latest technologies and over 600 cleanup companies in 30 countries

The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) through its chemical programme helps owners of contaminated sites - particularly in central and eastern Europe - clean their sites and thus make them economically productive again. In cooperation with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the UN/ECE has just issued the 2000 edition of its Compendium on Soil Cleanup Technologies and Soil Remediation Companies, a practical and user-friendly guide to the most important information needed to clean chemically contaminated areas.

Chemical pollution of soils is an all-too-common feature of modern life - pollution from leaking pipes, thoughtless disposal, unchecked corroding containers, chemical accidents or even deliberate actions. The diversity of pollutants today can make the choice of treatment technology complicated.

The new edition of the Compendium describes over 20 technologies for decontaminating soils polluted with heavy metals, chlorinated solvents, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, pesticides and other chemical pollutants. The technologies include both on-site and off-site techniques: physical, chemical or biological. Also given are the ratings on overall cost, time required, minimum achievable concentration, data needs, as well as other factors such as public acceptability of practising the technology.

Part II of the Compendium lists and describes the most important Internet websites for further information on technologies, companies and events occurring in the soil decontamination field. All of these sites are non-commercial information resources.

Part III lists and provides contact details of over 600 companies in around 30 countries which can practise the technologies. The companies are keyed to the specific technologies described in the first part of the Compendium.

The Compendium is available through the usual United Nations agencies in most countries, or direct from:
