The Stability Pact Gender Task Force Presentation to Donors

"TAKING THE POWER IS TAKING THE FUTURE"

In the framework of the ECE Regional Preparatory Meeting on the 2000 Review of the Implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action the Stability Pact Gender Task Force organized its first Donors’ Information Conference.

A presentation of the SPGTF and its plan of action for 2000 was held in the presence of governmental and NGOs Gender Task Force national representatives from 10 Stability Pact Countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, FYR of Macedonia, Greece, Hungary, Montenegro, Romania, Slovenia) and over one hundred participants, governmental and non-governmental bilateral and multilateral donors. The presentation led by Sonja Lokar, chair of the SPGTF and Mrs. Elizabeth Rasmusson, deputy head of OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina, focused on the success and the determination of women in South East Europe to put an end to the discrimination against women in public and political life. The most urgent plans of the SPGTF of political empowerment of women, connected to forthcoming elections in the Stability Pact countries like Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, FR Yugoslavia and Slovenia, had already started. The SPGTF Plan of Action was unanimously accepted as an urgent initiative helping this troubled region to more speedily find its way to sustainable peace, equality, economic prosperity and respect of all human rights. The meeting produced concrete commitments from donors’ countries. Contacts with donors will be followed up until the Stability Pact Donors’ Conference planned for March 2000 in Budapest.
