UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE ON ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH DEVELOPING REAL ESTATE MARKETS IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE AND THE CIS TO BE HELD IN PRAGUE

14 - 15 April 1999

For two days Prague will host the Conference on Economic Opportunities through Developing Real Estate Markets in Central and Eastern Europe and the CIS, jointly held by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The purpose of the Conference is to address the problems and bottlenecks that prevent the realisation of fully functioning real estate markets and to identify some of the actions and initiatives that are taking place to help remove them. Several case studies will be presented during the sessions on the second day.

The Conference will bring together representatives of the public and the private sector with interests in the development of fully functioning real estate markets. Among the participants are the Vice-Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, Pavel MertlĂk, Yves Berthelot, Executive Secretary of UN/ECE, Jan Havelka of CzechInvest and representatives of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and a number of state agencies from the region as well as from private sector, including Hypo Vereinsbank, Price Waterhouse Coopers, Volksbank Austria, West LB Bank and others. Welcome remarks will be addressed by Mayor of Prague Jan Kasl.

In 1997 the UN/ECE Committee for Trade, Industry and Enterprise Development established the Real Estate Advisory Group (REAG) to promote real estates markets in transition economies. It provides technical assistance to Governments by conducting advisory missions and undertaking analyses of land markets to identify opportunities for investment. To assist the missions of REAG in transition economies, the Terre Initiative was launched by UN/ECE and EBRD. The Terre Initiative, in association with the UN/ECE and the EBRD is the organiser of the Conference.
