NEW DIRECTOR OF
UN/ECE STATISTICAL DIVISION
Paolo GARONNA
Mr. Paolo Garonna, of Italy, has been
appointed Director of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE)
Statistical Division. He graduated from the University of Rome and holds a Masters degree
in Economics from the University of Denver (USA) and a Ph.D. from the University of
Cambridge.
Before joining the UN/ECE, Mr. Garonna was
Director General of the National Statistical Institute of Italy, an institute which is not
only a research institution but has a regulatory power in relation to the newly
established Sistema Statistico Nazionale.
In June 1993, Mr. Garonna was elected
Vice-Chairman and in 1998 Chairman of the Conference of European Statisticians. The
Conference works under the aegis of the UN/ECE and groups the Director Generals of all
European and North American Statistical Offices, of the OECD and of the countries of
central and eastern Europe.
Throughout his career Mr. Garonna has
worked with OECD as Deputy Director of Manpower Social Affairs and Education. He also held
a Chair of Applied Economics at the Faculty of Statistics of the University of Padua.
Author of many books and articles, Mr
Garonna has been economic advisor to Ministers and Prime Ministers in Italy and elsewhere.
Mr. Garonna was born on 30 August 1948. He
is married and has three children.
