PORTUGAL'S CHEMICAL INDUSTRY OPENS ITS DOORS

UN/ECE ORGANIZES STUDY TOUR

13 March 1998

The Portuguese chemical industry, with its wide and comprehensive range of basic, intermediate and final chemical products, is today a highly successful example of privatization and integration into the European Union. To make this exemplary achievement more widely known, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) is organizing a study tour in Portugal from 11 to 17 July 1998, in cooperation with the Portuguese Ministry of Economy. The dates were selected to coincide with the World Expo ´98 on the Oceans, taking place in Lisbon from June to September.

The principal objectives of the study tour are:

  • to promote contacts and exchange of views among representatives of governments, chemical federations and chemical enterprises
  • to encourage cooperation between companies

The tour will consist of visits to seven production firms, including chemical, petrochemical, plastics processing and pharmaceutical plants. It will also include meetings with the Government and with industry leaders. One day will be reserved for discussing Portugal's experience of privatization and multinational cooperation in research and development and will include a visit to a research institute. Another day will be devoted to a visit to Expo ´98, including an exhibit on soil decontamination in the part of the Expo site previously used by the chemical industry.

The study tour is intended for representatives of the chemical industry, trade associations, Governments, international organizations and non-governmental organizations, as well as journalists and other people concerned with the chemical industry. Participants from both large and small chemical companies are especially welcome, since the tour provides an opportunity to interact with many potential clients and joint venture partners from Portugal, as well as with other participants coming from a variety of countries.

UN/ECE is particularly keen to encourage representatives from countries in transition to participate. For this reason, the national organizers have kept the cost very low. As the number of places is limited, early registration is essential.
