THE IRON AND STEEL INDUSTRY OF THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA
Study Tour organized by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe

The Working Party on Steel of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe
(UN/ECE) is organizing a study tour of the iron and steel industry of the Republic of Korea, at
the invitation of that country. The study tour will take place from 9 to 15 November 1997. It
will comprise visits to the main iron and steel plants and steel consuming industries.
Following a presentation on Sunday 9 November of the evolution and principal
achievements of the Republic of Korea's iron and steel industry, its production plants and the
main technological processes, the study tour itself will start on Monday 10 November with a
visit to the Pohang steelworks of Pohang Iron and Steel Co., Ltd. (POSCO). Participants will
visit the steel making and continuous casting plants, harbour, coking plant, blast-furnace
followed by a tour of the research institute.
On Tuesday 11 November, the tour will visit Hyundai Motor Company: lines for
passenger cars and commercial vehicles, and Hyundai Heavy Industries: shipbuilding facilities,
engines and machinery.
On Wednesday 12 November, participants will visit POSCO's Kwangyang steelworks:
up-stream and down-stream production lines of the integrated steel works and the mini mill.
On Thursday 13 November, the tour will visit Dangjin steelworks of Hanbo Iron and Steel
Co., Ltd.: mini mills and Corex plant.
On Friday 14 November, participants will take part in the final session to be held in
Seoul. The study tour will end on Friday evening in Seoul.
Participants will leave the Republic of Korea on the morning of Saturday 15 September.
Interpretation in the three working languages of ECE - English, French and Russian - will
be provided during the study tour.
Participation in the tour is open to all interested persons and those nominated or
approved by their Governments or by international organizations which have been invited or
which normally participate in the work of ECE. The fee per participant is U$ 1,400. This
includes accommodation, meals, transfers and other services. Participants are expected to
make arrangements for their own transport to and from Seoul. Applications for visas should
be made at least two months before the start of the tour. In some cases, an invitation letter
from the Korean organizers might be required.
