ECOSOC Sub-Committee of Experts on the Transport of Dangerous Goods

Room XII.
During the first week, the Sub-Committee will consider matters related to the transport of solid dangerous substances in bulk in containers, testing and use of packagings, transport of infectious substances and genetically modified organisms and miscellaneous proposals related to the listing and classification of dangerous goods. In addition, three working groups will meet in parallel for specific subjects:

-       transport of gases (1-4 July) (Room C3

-       transport and storage of fireworks (1-3 July) (Room F3

-       transport of ammonium nitrate emulsions (4-5 July) (Room F3

During the second week (8-10 July), the Sub-Committee will discuss matters related to the transport of radioactive material, the transport of substances hazardous to the environment, as well as questions related to the security of the transport of dangerous goods and measures to prevent terrorist acts.

Second High-level Meeting on Transport, Environment and Health

Room XIX.

The Meeting, convened jointly by UNECE and WHO's Regional Office for Europe, will follow up the decisions taken at the First High-level Meeting (4 May 2001, Geneva). On the basis of the background documents prepared by the Joint UNECE -WHO Ad Hoc Expert Group, the Meeting is expected to establish a Transport, Environment and Health Pan-European Programme (THE PEP) to be jointly serviced by the UNECE and WHO/Euro secretariats as well as to consider the appropriateness of starting negotiations of a framework convention on transport, environment and health. It is finally expected to endorse the Mid-term Review of the Vienna Programme of Joint Action (POJA) and the Evaluation of the Implementation of the London Charter on Transport, Environment and Health.A Ministerial Panel will be held during the Meeting on the theme "Moving Towards Transport Sustainable for Environment and Health - A regional Message to Johannesburg".

Ad Hoc Meeting of Experts on Gender and Macroeconomics

The Meeting will discuss mainstreaming gender into economic policies in transition countries and identify joint activities within the framework of MoU between ECE and UNIFEM and the Beijing+5 follow up process. Invited experts as well as representatives of UNIFEM, ILO, UNCTAD and ITC will participate in the meeting.

Working Group for the Preparation of the First Meeting of Parties to the Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters

The Working Group will hold its third and last meeting in Pula to finalize preparations for the first meeting of the Parties to the Aarhus Convention, scheduled for 21-23 October 2002 in Italy.The Working Group is expected to agree on a number of draft decisions to be adopted by the Meeting of the Parties and a draft Ministerial Statement to provide the basis for discussions by the Ministers present at the meeting.A meeting on 7 July will consider reporting requirements for the Parties to the Convention.

ECOSOC Sub-Committee of Experts on the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals

Room XII.

The Sub-Committee will consider proposals related to the first draft of the "Globally Harmonized System for Hazard Classification and Communication" (GHS) so that a final draft can be prepared for adoption by the Committee in December. The Sub-Committee will also consider matters related to the implementation of the GHS in the context of the anticipated Rio+10 Conference objectives, cooperation with other organizations in that respect, as well as related capacity building projects foreseen by UNITAR, ILO and IPCS.
