Air Quality & Clean Coal Technologies
CAPACT

[English] [русский]

Goals

The two key and overriding objectives of the CAPACT project are:

  • More efficient use and production of energy in Central Asia

  • Improved air quality in Central Asia

The CAPACT project seeks to achieve these two main objectives through a series of interim phases which are encaptured in a graphic presentation (click here) for more and six discrete work packages (click here for more)

As encaptured by the key objectives, the CAPACT project encourages the implementation of the UNECE Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution (click here for more) and its protocols as well as to promote the application of appropriate clean coal combustion technologies (CCTs) for heat and power generation from solid fuels.

Implementation of the Convention and its Protocols will be achieved through work on:

  • developing policies to manage air quality,

  • air pollution monitoring, and

  • reporting of pollutant emissions.

To further facilitate this process the project aims to develop sub-regional cooperation as well as, in cooperation with UNEP, to strengthen links between Asian and European monitoring programmes.

Relationship to UN Millennium Development Goals

The CAPACT project contributes to achieving target number nine of the UN Millennium Development Goals (click here for more), notably to integrate the principles of sustainable development into country policies and programmes and reverse the losses of environmental resources. The project also contributes to the implementation of the Regional Environmental Action Plan for Central Asia.
