Statistics

Introduction

We support national statistical systems to meet the data needs of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, through

  • methodological guidance
  • modernization of statistics
  • capacity development.

By bringing together experts from across the statistical community, we promote efficiencies and innovative ways to tackle persistent and emerging challenges in official statistics.

Our work on statistics has lasting impact and global reach.

Exploring European inland water freight with maps

Inland waterways provide a low-cost, low-carbon, safe transport option for freight movements in many key European corridors, taking lorries off the road network.

The second in our new series of data stories combines data and maps to visualize transport volumes on rivers and canals, helping to translate data and statistics into policy-relevant messages.

Our first data story, on road safety in the UNECE region, marked the launch of a new interactive approach to presenting the data contained in the UNECE data portal.

In these times of growing inequalities, poverty is unquestionably one of the core challenges to achieving sustainable and just development. Yet, while the call to ‘leave no-one behind’ echoes all around us, the practicalities of measuring and understanding poverty make this easier said than done. The most vulnerable or disadvantaged groups remain the hardest to identify or capture in statistics, whether produced through surveys or using novel sources, from which they may be systematically excluded. Our Guide on Poverty Measurement and Poverty Measurement: Guide to Data Disaggregation support countries to produce high-quality and detailed poverty statistics, while annual meetings of our Group of Experts on Measuring Poverty and Inequality, organized by a Steering Group of international experts, provide a platform to examine emerging challenges and cutting-edge techniques for improving statistics on poverty, inequality and well-being. The 2022 expert meeting, which will take place on 8-9 December, will explore a range of topics including the data requirements for understanding poverty as a multidimensional and multi-layered concept; subjective experiences of poverty; and working with alternative data sources to meet increasing demand for rapid information about fast-changing situations affecting the lives of the vulnerable, such as conflict, the pandemic, rising housing and energy costs, and climate change.

Highlights

  • Data is crucial for understanding the extent of the effects and impacts of climate change and for shaping our efforts to tackle it and adapt to it. Our COP28 side event on Enabling climate action through data, transparency and finance emphasized the need for high-quality statistics and data to support reporting, policymaking and public awareness.
  • The landscape of information available to the public and policymakers has changed drastically in recent years. Our work on data stewardship outlines how the producers of official statistics can navigate these changes, playing a leading role in ensuring the ethical and responsible creation, collection, management, use and reuse of data so that they are used for public good and benefit the full community of data users.
